Polio was one of the most feared diseases until the 1950's, when American research scientist Jonas E. Salk (1914- ) developed a vaccine against it. In the photograph here, Salk is shown administering an injection during the mass testing of his vaccine in 1954. In 1960, American researcher Albert B. Sabin developed a second vaccine, one that could be taken by mouth.
